Juneau Birth Records Overview
About Juneau Birth Records
Juneau is the state capital and the only U.S. state capital not reached by road. About 31,500 people live in the City and Borough of Juneau. Most births in town are filed at Bartlett Regional Hospital. The hospital sends the report to HAVRS, which then files it as the legal Juneau birth record. Since the main vital records office sits right in town, locals have the easiest path of any city in Alaska when it comes to getting a copy.
Juneau birth records hold the full name of the child, the date and place of birth, the names of both parents, and the file number. Hospitals fill out most of the form. The state then logs the data and stores the record in the central system. People use Juneau birth records to get a passport, prove age, sign up for benefits, or trace family history. Older Juneau birth records are useful for genealogy work in southeast Alaska.
Note: Juneau is the home base of the state vital records system, so locals can walk in for any Alaska birth record on the same day.

How to Order Juneau Birth Records
You have four ways to order Juneau birth records. The fastest is to walk in. The cheapest is by mail. The easiest from home is online through VitalChek. Fax is also an option for those who need to send a request quickly.
Walk-in service at the Juneau main office is the top pick for most locals. You bring the form, a photo ID, and the fee. The clerk hands you the certified copy the same day. The fee is $30 for the first copy and $25 for each extra copy ordered at the same time. Cash, check, and credit or debit cards are accepted at the counter.
Online orders go through VitalChek. You upload your ID, fill in the form, and pay with a card. The order ships in two to three weeks. There is an extra fee for the online service. Use the VitalChek Alaska page to start a Juneau birth records order.
Mail orders take longer. Send the form, a copy of your ID, and a check or money order to Health Analytics and Vital Records, P.O. Box 110675, Juneau, AK 99811-0675. The state takes two to three months to fill mail orders. Fax orders go to (907) 465-3618 and follow the same time frame as mail.

Who Can Order Juneau Birth Records
Alaska is a closed-record state. Only certain people can order a Juneau birth record that is less than 100 years old. Eligible parties include the person on the record (age 14 or older), a parent listed on the file, a legal guardian with court papers, an attorney with a letter on letterhead, or a third party with a notarized release. The state checks ID for every order under Alaska Statute Title 18, Chapter 50.
Older Juneau birth records become public after 100 years. That means a record made in 1925 or earlier is now open to anyone. The Alaska State Archives in Juneau is the place to look for these. The archives is at 141 Willoughby Avenue, just down the road from the HAVRS main office. Free public access is offered on site.
Note: A clear copy of a valid photo ID is required for every Juneau birth records order, and the state will reject forms with missing or blurry ID pages.
Juneau Historical Birth Records
Juneau has a long set of old vital records. Some Juneau birth records go back as far as 1913 to 1915 in the state index. Russian Orthodox parishes also kept early birth events for many southeast Alaska towns. These church records are the best source for births before the state took over in 1913.
The Alaska State Archives in Juneau holds vital statistics from 1816 through 1998. The archives worked with FamilySearch to scan more than 1.1 million pages of Alaska vital records. Many old Juneau birth records are now free to view online.
You can plan a visit through the archives site, or browse the digital scans on the FamilySearch Alaska vital records wiki. Both are free to use.
