About Kenai Birth Records

Kenai is one of the oldest settlements in Alaska. Russian fur traders set up a post here in the late 1700s. The Russian Orthodox Church kept early records of births, marriages, and deaths in the community. Some of these church records go back to the 1800s. The Alaska State Archives has Kenai birth records indexed from 1889 to 1948, which makes them among the oldest in the state system.

Today, all Kenai birth records are filed with HAVRS, the Health Analytics and Vital Records Section of the Alaska Department of Health. The office is in Juneau at 5441 Commercial Boulevard. A walk-in branch is in Anchorage at 3901 Old Seward Highway, Suite 101. Neither the City of Kenai nor the Kenai Peninsula Borough issues birth certificates. Everything goes through the state.

Births at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna and other area clinics are reported to the state within five days under AS 18.50. The state logs the data and stores the record. Kenai birth records list the child's full name, date and place of birth, and both parents' names.

How to Order Kenai Birth Records

Kenai residents have the same four options as all Alaskans. Online is the most common. Walk-in at the Anchorage office is the fastest. Mail is the cheapest. Fax also works.

Online orders go through VitalChek, the only site approved by the state. Upload your ID, fill in the form, and pay with a card. The order ships in two to three weeks. A service fee is added on top of the $30 state charge. This is the most handy option for Kenai residents since there is no walk-in office on the peninsula.

The Anchorage HAVRS office is about a three-hour drive from Kenai on the Sterling and Seward highways. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Bring a photo ID and $30 for the first copy. Each extra copy at the same time is $25. The staff can pull any Kenai birth record from the state system and hand it to you the same day. This is a solid option if you have a trip to Anchorage planned.

Mail orders go to P.O. Box 110675, Juneau, AK 99811-0675. Include the form, a copy of your ID, and a check or money order. The state takes two to three months. Fax goes to (907) 465-3618. Use one method per request. The Alaska Department of Health vital records orders page has the latest forms for Kenai birth records.

Kenai Birth Records Eligibility

Recent Kenai birth records are private under Alaska law. AS 18.50.310 keeps birth records closed for 100 years. Only certain people can order a certified copy.

Eligible parties include the person named on the record (age 14 or older), a parent listed on the certificate, a legal guardian with court papers, an attorney on letterhead, or a third party with notarized consent. The state checks ID for every order. Accepted forms are a driver's license, state ID, passport, military ID, or Tribal card with a photo. School IDs work for minors.

Kenai birth records older than 100 years are public. Given that Kenai has records from 1889, some of the oldest ones are now open to anyone. These are useful for tracing Russian-era and early Alaska families. The full rules are in Alaska Statute Title 18, Chapter 50.

Fees for Kenai Birth Records

Fees for Kenai birth records match the statewide schedule. First copy is $30. Extra copies at the same time are $25 each. Heirloom certificates are $55 for the first and $50 for extras. Amendments and name changes cost $60 and include one new copy. An apostille for foreign use is $42 plus the record fee. Special research by HAVRS staff runs $75 per hour.

Make checks payable to the Alaska Vital Records Office. Cards work at walk-in offices and on VitalChek. The state does not take cash by mail.

Note: If you need a Kenai birth record for a court case or legal matter, the certified copy from HAVRS is the only version that courts accept.

Historical Kenai Birth Records

Kenai has some of the deepest historical birth records in Alaska. The state archives has indexed Kenai births from 1889 to 1948. Before that, Russian Orthodox Church records in Kenai are the primary source. The Church of the Holy Assumption, built in 1895, kept logs of baptisms and births for the local community. These church records were later microfilmed by the Bureau of Vital Statistics to create delayed birth certificates.
